Finishing off art journal session stuff!

Last art journal session with the gang I started a background.  Then over the next day I created a tag for the topper.  Now it is time to finish the page off and share it with you.

image

This how the background finished after playing with gelatos during the art journal session and of course some paint splatters.

image

Next I add some clock stamping and started on the tag to add to the front.

image

I was particularly keen to try out the glass bead gel I had bought.

image

This was the dried effect.

image

I added a wash of colour and wiped it back a bit.

image

This meant the beads were shiny again through the paint.

Next it was time to play with finishing touches…

image

Some more paint bits and pieces through stencils and with the credit card.  Plus a bit of colour to the feature clock.

The theme for homework was TIME… I think I fulfilled my own brief!

Happy crafting!

Update from Mixed media card class

Mo and I enjoyed a really relaxing and chilled out class tonight as it was just the two of us.

Here are the cards we made.

image

image

I put the little montages together using the Project Life app which I am enjoying using at the moment to document life.

Anyways… a lovely evening resulting in inky fingers and a hug with a friend. Can’t ask for anything more!

Happy crafting!

Mixed media card class

It is time for my monthly mixed media card class with my friends.  My theory behind these classes is to take one stamp set and show a few different ways of using it that are not the usual ‘SU style’ and make some arty cards.  We use different media and techniques we learnt together the past year or so when doing art journalling techniques.

Last month for various reasons i ended up cancelling the class so these cards have been waiting to be blogged for quite some time! So for this session the stamp set was Lovely as a Tree which is a real oldie but goodie!

I starter the samples off with a simple Brusho card.

image

Watercolour card stamped in Archival.  Then added some drops of Gamboge and Brilliant Red to the trees and spritzer with water to activate and move the colour.  Then added some Cobalt blue to the sky.  I kept an eye on how the water and colour moved and dabbed it with a tissue if there were puddles of colour or too much water to soften the blend.  Once it was dry I edged the card with some ink and then doodled the outline onto the Kraft card blank with a white paint pen.

Next sample I went for a distress ink background but made it a little different by cutting it into two panels.

I kept to autumnal colours again as I was avoiding green colours but this would work well with green instead of the oranges.
image
I stamped the leaf stamps in the background using the distress inks and then the oak leaves onto book print and then cut them out. I added some more blending of ink on them before adhering all the pieces to the black layer. I took a strip of black and gold embossed the sentiment and then hand cut it out. I do have the dies but was trying to avoid using them for this class. Finally I watered down a little gesso and flicked it onto the panels so that it gave a nice splatter effect.

The next sample was using some left over cardboard from the haul to gathered for making junk journals.
image
I mixed some blue gelato into some texture paste and then added it to the corrugated card. Next I stuck the stars into the texture paste and then let it dry out. Then added a little more gelatos with water onto the card. Again I let it dry out.

I then stamped the fir tree onto the cardboard a couple of times and then again onto some white card. I cut out the tree and adhered it to the card panel. Then I dabbed some texture paste onto the tree.

Then I added some stickles in silver down the card panel and rubbed them over the tree too. For the card base I broke it up with a black strip on which I stamped in white craft ink the little pine cone and sprig and edged the black strip with the white. The sentiment was stamped onto white and cut out.

The final card was a gelli plate trick with ink. I must admit it is not my best attempt but it gives the idea and in the class we might come up with better ways of doing it.
image

I blended Hello Honey and Bermuda Bay onto the gelli plate and stamped the leaves round the edge using Mossy Meadow then printed the image. Next I stamped the oak tree in Mossy meadow, tore a piece of scrap and brushed some mossy meadow under the tree as a shadow. Not the most inventive use of the gelli plate but maybe we will come up with some better ideas in the class?

Will share an update with creations later.

Happy crafting!

Stylish woman

Now those who know me, know that I am not a stylish woman. I am a woman of comfort and fun.  I do however have stylish parents so I suppose it is in my genes to wish to be stylish. I spotted the Vogue colouring book in Waterstones recently and had to buy it. I knew the large images would be perfect for the large square Dylusions journal.

People who follow me on Instagram and Facebook will have seen this page developing over the last few weeks.

image

The book has double sided pages so not ideal but at more than 90 pages long I can live with having to choose half of them.  The images inside are fabulous… and full of stylish women.

image

So this is where I am going with this post … yes just like the dragon fly page a few days ago I will be adding an image from the colouring book into my journal.

Stage 1… background prep.  This was a page I wiped stencils off onto when doing the dragonfly page…

image

Lovely already… but I wanted lots of colour not something delicate…

image

Is that colourful enough? Well it’s a start.  So I have Paperartsy fresco finish paints (Baltic Blue and Bora Bora).  Gelato in Blood orange. White gesso through stencils and stamped the Kim Dellow Paperartsy stamps. Orange paint mixed with gesso through a stencil. More stamping in Archival ink.  Lines of white acrylic using a credit card.  Yes I think that’s what I had done by this point. I also used a stencil and a baby wipe to remove some colour in some places too.

Left that to one side and started colouring the image I chose…

image

Watercolour pencils used for layer one.

image

Water added to blend pencils for layer 2.

Love that the book gives the text about the outfit… I obviously ignored the colour instructions completely and went with what I fancied!

image

Ok back to the journal page… I kept it open on my desk and kept adding a little bit at a time when I could grab a five minute moment of creativity. So I added some blue gelato and then some yellow paint blending both with my fingers. Then some splatters of white and the Baltic Blue added and some more lines with the credit card edge in both colours. Then added some more stamping with the Baltic Blue and Kim’s fab circles. Then my favourite stencil of the moment (Dot Fade, Tim Holtz) with a bit of white paint.
image

Time to sort the stylish woman out… a bit of acrylic paint to blend and balance the skin, more watercolour pencils to add depth and colour intensity, and some white acylic to add some highlights.
image
Gorgeous!
I cut her out and started on the idea of placement. I think she works best to the left of the layout.
image

Yes I know there are still some white bits near her elbows to sort…. and she is too big for the page so her gloves are not going to make it into the page. I had suspected this so hadn’t done anything to them for layer 3 of colouring her in. So I drew round her with pencil so I knew what space she took up and then white acrylic added to provide a ‘glow’.
image

I used a fairly dry brush as I wanted the paint to feather out.

Time to stick her down…. Matt medium used to stick her down and good coat over the top too.
image
There were a few wrinkles despite my best efforts to get it flat… maybe she doesn’t iron either?

Anyways… Once this was all dry (maybe a whole 24 hours later) … It was time to add some outlining and some splatters to bed her into the picture a little more. I also started to add a title for the page and some little stickers. Plus the date and part of the description of the outfit from the book.

image

Oh at some point I had also added some gold paint into a few areas and added a bit of white again too.
image

I stencilled the CHOOSE and STYLE. Then painted it in black and once dry added the white for dimension. I am still not confident in my lettering skills but I know it’s a practice makes perfect thing so need to do more of this.

Right time to show you the completed page in all its glory…

image

I am really pleased with how this page turned out and with the colouring book. I think the images from the colouring book will provide some good inspiration and different pages for me to create.

Happy crafting!

P.S. I know it was a long post so well done on getting through it to the end. I just wanted to share as much of my process as I could. ☺

New starts, little things are the big things

Today is a new start kind of day! I went back to work after three months off sick. So it seems appropriate to share something made in my new Dylusions journal (yes I have started another journal)!

Here is a picture of the page from about 3/4 of the way through the process…

image

As you can see in the pictures below I had some issues with the tissue stamping and adhering it to the page… This is the second time it went wrong but decided to stick with it!

image

image

This is the point I left the page overnight to dry (and because it was quite late at night already).

A couple of days later I finished the page.

image
image

image

Absolutely love how it finished up. Beautiful colours and love the dragon fly which I cut out of the Animal Kingdom colouring book and coloured using Promarkers and those fabulous stamps by Kim Dellow for Paperartsy.

image

image

Hope you like it.

Here is another picture in the sunshine… love a bit of natural light!

Now off we go on our new starts … remembering of course to enjoy the little things.

Scrapping again!

Yes I am scrapping again … although keeping my style quite mixed media for this page…

image

This was created because I stumbled across the paper and cardstock ready with the picture but nothing done with them in a scrapbook awaiting compiling.   So I did it there and them!

I cut the paper and layered everything up and stuck it down.  Then flicked gesso in a diagonal across the page.  Then I coloured some gesso with gelatos and added more splats.  I then hunted out some stickers and added those.  Then added some shading and colour using the gelatos.

image

I found some cute pearl star embellishments and added them along with the journalling strips and other stickers.

image

The photo I had already edited and added to before getting it printed.  I think this was using the Rhonna designs app.

So it was nice to do some scrapping on the spur of the moment … and to grunge it up a bit!

Wax page in my Paperartsy journal

The third topic this year for Paperartsy blog was wax… wax! Not something I felt confident about.   Gelatos were mentioned in Leandra’s blog post introducing the theme though so I started with them and started on this page way back on 9th February!

image

So these photos show the first stage of play… gelatos scribbled randomly in blocks.  Water added with fingers to blend.  More colour added and blended.  Gesso added randomly with finger and blended.

Later that day I added a stamped border on each page using some Dylusions stamps Karen let me use.  I also added more gelatos and more gesso.
image

Starting to build a nice background. But not exactly wax in my book! Off I went to watch You Tube videos and of course keep my eye on the Paperartsy blog design team contributors.

I love Darcy’s completely fabulous wax poppy picture which showed lots of wax techniques. I also loved a You Tube video someone posted in the Patwits group showing papers being waxed and sewn. These took me down the route I ended up taking.

But first I used some grunge paste mixed with a purple paint through a stencil to provide some texture.

image

Then I added some shavings of kids wax crayons in splodges and melted them with my heat gun with a piece of paper over the top to stop then from moving about too much.
image
image

I must admit this wasn’t really going well. I was struggling to control the wax but I do think it adds some interest to the background.

Next time to do the feature image.

image

I stamped the mannequin in Watering Can archival and then the text in Seedless Preserves distress ink onto some photocopy paper and tore it into a nice shape. Then I put the piece on a tray and melted a Yankee candle onto the paper until the whole piece was covered. I then set it aside to dry. The benefits of using a scented candle is that it smelt lovely in the craft room as a result! 🙂

I then took the rest of the photocopy paper and tore that as a mount, crinkled it up and inked it with the distress inks (seedless preserve and abandoned coral).
image

Round the edge I stamped the zip stamp from the same Hot Picks Paperartsy stamps.

I then used my sewing machine to sew these together in my usual scruffy sewing style.
image

I then added this to the journal with matt medium and left it to dry. I then felt that the title should be in a similar colour to the mounting panel. I stamped that onto the scrap, tore it out and inked it up.

At this point I felt that it needed something else.
image
I grabbed some teal coloured gilding wax and added in a few random areas. This gave it some more depth and shine and also incorporated another wax!

Decided it needed some more stamping…
image

The scissors were stamped… and then words!
image

I grabbed the ink and the Dog buttons plate and stamped words from that in the distress inks randomly which I think really finished the page off nicely. I then edged the pages with Midnight Muse ink and added the topic and month at the bottom.

A really long post showing all the steps so of you got this far… well done! I am trying to show stages as best as I can so people can see how I work when putting together a page. It also helps me document how I got to where I am. Next topic to be tacked is image transfer which is not my best skill… may take some practice!

Happy crafting!

Quick update from art journalling session

Just a quick update with what we made during our art journalling session where the theme was GRATITUDE.

Linda concentrated on drawing a face.  No pics as yet but will hopefully update once she has finished it.

Mo worked on a canvas board again and made this delicate and pretty piece…

image

Mara brought some pieces for her page in her junk journal…

image

Karen chose a delicate palette for her page in her journal and although it’s not finished it is looking great already…

image

I went a bit mad with letters for mine…

image

And very much using the lessons learnt from the weekend added layer upon layer of colour and texture.  The page already had a bit of texture paste on it that was wiped off from other projects and using up pre coloured paste.  I used lots of odd letter stickers and thickers and added them to the page before adding gesso and paint.  The little letters were added later using letters out of the die cut that Mara had brought.

I also used some Indigo Blu stamps that Karen had brought to add the alpha stamping in the backgrounds too.

The sentiment was one I had printed for the class and I added this to the tag which I had been painting as I went along and added the little die cut heart to.  I decided to have it overlap the page and once I’ve decorated the other side I will add some trim to dangle off the tag as I think that will be a nice touch to soften the page more.

image

image

image

I also created a palette page like in class on Saturday… Here it is at the moment… interesting to see how these develop… and glad there isn’t the massive amount of black like Saturdays.

image

I did quite a lot of stamping using other people’s stamps and a bit of die cutting for other future projects and also worked on another journal background whilst I was doing this page… that was fun trying to multi task!

A lovely and relaxing evening with friends! Perfect therapy.

Happy crafting!

Mixed media card class

I decided that alongside the usual art journalling sessions with the gang I would also do some mixed media card classes so that they could use the techniques we’ve built up in the past 12 months to create some cards too.

This month I used the Stampin Up Balloon Celebrations set… yes I am all about this set at the moment!  Two different classes in one week… I must be mad!

image

This is a gelatos based card.  A few gelatos used to create the background, blending with my fingers.  Then a stencil over the top and a baby wipe to remove some colour.  I had also placed a post it note as a mask first so that some of it remained white.

I removed the post it note and used the gelatos on the stamps and then stamped those randomly.  I love these random stamps in the set.  Perfect for creating backgrounds.

I also used gelatos to stamp the balloons.  Because the stamps are solid though you don’t get the best stamped image, but it picks up the colouring pattern which I quite liked.

A couple of the gelatos I used were metallic too, so there is some shine to them.  I also added some stickles dots to add the bling.

The sentiment I used a SU marker to ink up so I could have the sentiment on top of each other rather than in a line.
I also did a bit of fun for the envelope…

image

Post it notes are perfect for this so you can maintain a clean space for the name and address but jazz it up for the postbox appeal!

Next card…

image

This is a very grungey card!  I used paint brayered onto it keeping it fairly dry so it picked up the texture of the cardstock.  For this and gelatos I used Acrylic paper rather than smooth cardstock.  It was perfect for this card in particular.

I stamped using paint too, and added lines using the edge of the acrylic block.
I did the same for the smaller piece of cardstock, and then edged it with the blue paint to make it stand out. The larger piece I edged with Sepia Archival ink.

I stamped the balloons onto another scrap of acrylic using the paint and then once they were dry I punched them out.  I affixed the twine before adding the balloons.  The sentiment was stamped and edged with the Sepia archival ink.

Love this grungey look… a bit more masculine than the others. I also played on the envelope adding a border to the base…

image

The next card I grabbed my favourite media… Brushos of course!

image

I used the brushos (scarlet red, cobalt blue, lemon, sea green) direct onto the craft mat in a line and then sprayed water.  They puddled nicely and then I used an embossing folder to stamp the zig zag.  I set the piece aside to dry then put another piece of cardstock into the ink puddles.  Again I set that aside to dry.

I got my larger piece of cardstock out next and added some taps of Brushos around the edge (the same colours)and then added some sprays of water to activate the crystals.  This then created the bottom layer.  All of the three pieces then had to dry.

Once they were dry I stamped the ribbons for the balloons and the stars onto the zig zag piece.  Next I punched the balloons out of the multi coloured smaller piece. I then stamped the outlines… easy to do with photopolymer stamps.

I layered the balloons onto the ribbons and then added the seniment and edged each piece with black ink.

Again a few dots of stickles finished it off…. and did a quick envelope… bit of doodling!
image

Final card… This time distress stains and distress micro glaze used to make the background.
image

I used water through the stencil to create the pattern and then once it was dry I stamped the dandelion seeds in archival ink. Quite a simple one to make but I think quite effective!

Once again, stickles are dotted around to add that bit of sparkle.
image
This is the envelope where I used the same technique but on a small patch in the corner.

So here are my cards for class… well to be fair none of my classes are really classes, more that they are relaxing fun time with friends… just what I needed.

Happy crafting!
