Flowers postcard

The theme for this month at the Postcard art swap group was flowers in my garden… well I don’t really have many of those so I’ve used some creative licence and used the flower from Butterfly Basics to add the floral element to this postcard.

I added the Tim Holtz tissue wrap and then gesso to the panel and then lots of brushos using the Matt medium to make them less reactive. I stamped in archival and coloured using the Brushos again. Then I added some subtle texture and pattern stamping too.

Next I added the glitter paste through a stencil to create the chicken wire type fence. I mounted the artwork onto some pale kraft cardstock I had stamped with hardwood to give it a frame.

Last night’s crafty session

So I had lots of fun with my friends at last night’s crafty session. We each made a background…. 

Then we cut them up to a template and swapped pieces so that we would make 5 cards… two with the backgrounds we had made and the other three cards would be using one piece from the others. 

So my cards … well if I am honest I finished them after work tonight before I put everything away… but they were mostly done last night…

I loved being able to work with the panels others had made and love how different they all were. I must admit that as I had the luxury of a bit more time than just during the session I did add a few extra bits (the additional elements like the flowers and butterflies) but kept to the same available materials as at the session.

Background swap arty session

Tonight there are a few of my friends coming round for a crafting session.  Originally this was pre Christmas but it ended up being a date no-one could make…so instead it’s tonight for us to have some fun with Distress Oxides. 

I decided that we could all make some pretty papers and then make cards from them… but with a twist… once we’ve made the paper we cut it into pieces and then swap so we have some of each other’s papers. 

I did however need to make a couple of samples to see if we could design cards regardless of the style of the papers we made… with similar elements…. 

… so I first made a vintage themed background with Peeled Paint, Faded Jeans, Vintage Photo, Frayed Burlap and Walnut Stain. 

I used a selection of stamps… Timeless Textures, Affection Collection, Butterfly Basics, Sheet Music.

Next I made a bright and funky one… Picked Raspberry, Twisted Citron, Spiced Marmalade, Cracked Pistachio, broken china.  And stamped using stamps from Tap Tap Tap, Handcarved, Happy Celebrations, Butterfly Basics.

Then I cut them into panels… 

… And then started to put together cards based on the same sketches that I put together (whilst eating lunch at work I managed to get some ideas down on paper! 

I started with an inlay die cut using the swirly scribble thinlits die. This provides a lovely finish and needs very little to finish it off.  I just added a stitched framelit oval and a sentiment to each of them and changed the orientation of the cards.

Next I took the other larger panels and I die cut a frame effect using two rectangle dies.  I popped the frame up on foam pads and then added the diecut birds to the middle panel before sticking it back in place.  I added some wink of Stella to the bids and a die cut sentiment label and added twine to each of them … one the linen thread and the other the bakers twine. 

I decided to change the orientation for each of them again to show two possibilities for the card design.

Next up I wanted to use die cut sentiments.  As I was layering two panels of the cardstock I did add a little ink to the edges to give them more definition.  I felt one needed a white sentiment and the other a black.

So onto another layered layout.  I couldn’t resist using this dragonfly die cut for both of the cards.  I just adjusted the position of the bottom panel for each card and chose a different placement for the sentiment.  I die cut both dragonflies from white adding colour using my clarity brushes to keep it gentle.

And finally I gave both of the final cards a mount of black and on one I tore an edge and the other I left it straight.  Then I layered two flower die cuts that i had done in black and white and reversed the order to give them a different look.  I added lots of wink of Stella to the black top level on the bright card as it needed some shimmer.

I am really happy with how these came together as samples… wonder how the session will go and if we will manage to do something different? I’ve diecut loads of bits and pieces and so it will be interesting to see what people use!

Scraps off the desk… 347-351

Scraps off the desk always make interesting starting point for ATCs…. and here are some examples… These were using some pieces of paper I had wiped stamps off when playing with my gelli plate, distress oxides and the Burlap stamp.   I added different stamps and different finishes to them to make these ATCs…

1. Dreams take flight.

The feather stamp and sentiment came with a magazine. It’s a two step stamp and I stamped the base and the top in different colours of distress oxide and then added clear emboss to the top layer. I had made sure I dried it in between to only add the embossing on the top layer as the distress oxide can stay wet a while. I then heat embossed the sentiment in Black to make sure it stood out. 

I added a delicate amount of the black soot to the edge and then added a strip of turquoise gems down one side before mounting it on Fresh Fig cardstock.

2. Ruffle your feathers…

This is very similar to the one above but with a different colour scheme and some additional stamping using the Timeless Textures stamps and of course distress oxides again! 

3. Map your dreams…

This time I added a torn piece of map paper and some machine sewing to add texture and some different effects.

4. Fly

Same approach as the one above but this time a die cut and some heat embossing of the gorgeous birdcage image. Then I added the label word to add a graphic element.

5. Layers with wine

This time I took several pieces of the leftover scrap paper, tore them, inked the edges and layered them up. The top piece j added the stamped image from half full stamp set and added a little bit of colour to the grapes and outside edge to add definition. Love how all the layers coordinate and yet provide distinct layers.

So that’s 5 different ways of approaching the scraps on the table and turning them into mini artworks.  Very happy with these! 

And now only 16 to go to the target… whoop!

Circle journal for Chris

Today I finally get to share what I made for Chris’ circle journal. She had made her journal using cardboard envelopes… so fab and very unlikely to fall apart with using mediums on them as they are nice and sturdy. She also had a fab idea of giving some prompts and the one I had for mine was to include numbers of different kinds on it. So I went to town with the numbers!

Here was the first layer I created.

I used plenty of soft and earthy colours of Fresco finish paints to create the background and then added stamped numbers from lots of different Paperartsy sets.

Then using an Andy Skinner stencil I added some iridescent medium. Then I left it to dry.

The next day I added some more paint to tone down the background a little and added some stencilling, splatters and marks with the edge of a credit card.

I must admit I still wasn’t sure what to so with this page next. I grabbed some paper that had an index from an atlas on it, ripped it and added distress oxide in fired brick and vintage photo and then the mojo started to work properly. Next thing I knew I had been sewing on the machine and by hand, stamping the main image. Stamping and embossing with frantage and I had this lovely sewing themed page.

The finishing touches were to add some Tim Holtz stickers (including some number ones) adding some inktense to them.

I am so pleased with how this ended up. I really had no idea where to go with it but it came together beautifully and I enjoyed making it immensely. Just hope Chris likes what I did.

For ATC’S sake … 124 & 125

Another couple of ATC’S towards the challenge for the year… 

I started with these Gelli prints on patterned paper. I added some stamping using the Dictionary stamp. Next I added some stamped flowers which I cut out and edged with pink ink, and then added some of the splats from Timeless Treasures.

Both of the flowers were stamped several years ago and have just sat in the stash. Good to get them out and find a use for them. 

I then added some iridescent medium through a stencil over part of the each of the cards.  Once it was dry I added the finishing touches…

… flowers and a little quote which I got off a calendar.

Love how these both came out.

Lindsay Mason ATC swap (For ATC’S sake… 61, 62 and 63)

Tonight I should have been hosting Gelli plate play but having come home with a terrible headache I am instead about to get into a lovely bath and then have an early night.  So instead of sharing that I am instead sharing three ATC’S I made a few weeks ago for Lindsay Mason’s ATC swap in January.  

The swap theme is a memorable movie quote. I couldn’t get the “you had me at hello” from jerry maguire so decided to create three love themed ATC’S that are similar but not the same. 

My starting point was this piece of cardstock I had been using as my scratch paper for another couple of projects. 

I love the way that the cardstock transforms and the colours work so well together. 

So I chose three parts of the cardstock and cut out the necessary 2.5 x 3.5 atcs and started adding pattern and texture.  I started with some foiling and drawing little hearts all over the cards I then added some texture stamps and inked the edges.

Now to chose the focal image.  I decided to use my favourite Darcy heart stamps. I coloured each of them differently using distress stains.

I added some layers of muslin and glass bead gel before adding the hearts and letting it dry. 

Next it was time to add the quote… and add a little bit of doodling etc.  

Love how these all came out. Hopefully the recipients also like them too! I got a fab selection in response. 

As this project features hearts… I am entering it into the Wicked Wednesday challenge.

Masks/Stencils, Timeless Textures

For ATC’S sake … 5, 6, 7

Today I have three ATC’S that all started from the same base but all are very different. 

The base was some cardstock I had wiped off a stencil on where I had used iridescent medium. This left a lovely dotty background which worked perfectly as a resist too! 

So to all of them I added Distress ink in shabby shutters and then on two I also added peeled paint and on the other old linen. Then started building up the ATC’S. 

This one I added a strip of green paper and then the beautiful butterfly I found in the embellishment box. then I added a little tag that I stamped on and then added the ribbon with added coloured staple.

The final touches were to add the stamping of some splotches using old linen. 

OK the second one, this one I added some embossed silver tape, hessian and a little image I found. Then I dug out the gilding flakes and added those as a border to the piece. 

And the final one… i went a bit fun and funky. I added a strip of both apple patterned paper and green paper. I also added the faux stitching detail down it.

The image is one I got on a swap… just so cute. So although it’s not exactly seasonal it works so well with the paper and the background I had to use it. 

So seven days into the challenge and 7 ATC’S made. On track for 365 in the year.. just 358 left to go! worried? Nah.

Quick arty cards

I’ve been involved with a lot of swaps and ATC trades recently and I always like to send a little card with them where I can. Here is one of the cards I’ve made recently for swapping an ATC.  

I started with the Timeless Textures stamps and used Cheesecake Fresco finish paint to stamp the flourish and then mahogany for the spots.  The plane from Sky’s the Limit was stamped using Chocolate chip and the sentiment from an Indigo Blue set is the same. Using almost dry sponges for applying the paint I then stamped the clocks from the Indigo Blue set and they came out a lovely mix of the colours.  I finished the little shaped card off with some bakers twine. 

I think a simple and cute card.
